Since my first DUMBO post was semi-popular (and if not in comments then in page views) compared to some of my other posts at least, I shall attempt to capitalize on the sequel, no matter how much better the original was, and hope that the undiscerning public will pay the admission fee with their twenty second attention spans, and be deeply corrupted by the imagery that for the most part is misleading in that very little of it is actually DUMBO, or at least was not made there but from a boat at dusk, and sometimes isn’t even New York City at all.

It is in more ways than any other, a study not of this amazing purple vomit that surrounds the city at times, but of its reflections and shadows on the man-made structures that are the real wonder of the Big Apple.

Continued from the last photograph, the deep blue clouds ripe with rain make the city look empty and flat, devoid of soul.

And this is Jersey City, west of Manhattan. It may aspire to be, but NYC it is not. The Colgate clock reminds you that it’s 24 minutes to 8. Have you brushed your teeth yet?

Finally on the east side of Manhattan island, that’s Pier 17 that you’ll want to visit if you like mediocre food at midtown prices.

Ah yes, the very reason for having DUMBO in the title, the venerable Brooklyn Bridge. Almost as annoying to look at for the millionth time as it is to drive on. It is very New York by all standards.

I don’t remember exactly where in the city this is, but I wanted some filler so you can feel like you’ve gotten your monies worth.

This should help too.

This is DUMBO, the most photographed part of Brooklyn. A magical place, where precious film and shutter actuations are conspicuously squandered for no purpose other than just because. And why the hell not? It affords me my next favorite thing besides photography: scaring unsuspecting strangers.

They did not expect me to whip out the photon snatcher as they passed by. He must have though it was a double-u-em-dee, what with them Homeland Insecurity standard issue x-ray shades.

He became very self-conscious of himself as I was stealing their photo, though I’d be too if I was dressed like that, having my photo taken with graffiti in the background, looking like I just wandered into a neighborhood where they hunt my kind for the oils in the skin.

Come September, expect to see just about all NYC yellow cabs dressed in flowery overcoats, as fall fashion permeates the citizenry and leaves no cab behind.

Here’s a quote from NYC.gov:

“Garden in Transit,” a temporary public art project, will be displayed on New York City’s yellow taxicabs in the Fall of 2007. This privately-funded project will celebrate the 100th anniversary of New York’s first motorized taxi as part of TAXI ‘07, an initiative led by the Taxi and Limousine Commission and the Design Trust for Public Space. Beginning September 2006, school-aged children from local hospitals, after-school programs, and recreation centers throughout the five boroughs, assisted by thousands of adult volunteers, will paint large, colorful flowers onto self-adhesive material that will be installed on yellow taxicabs beginning September 2007. Volunteer opportunities range from on-going participation to one-time only projects.

It’s a privately-funded project, so that ought to make it that much more palatable. If you’re in the area, take the opportunity to leave your mark. You’ll enjoy such pastimes as rolling around in a rainbow of paint, working up a solid appetite, and having your name on your own work in a moving gallery.
